Description: Journalism Club will be open to any fourth or fifth grader interested in learning more about journalism: how we define journalism, what kinds of opportunities there actually are in the field of journalism, and how students can discover and develop their talents in reporting/writing/editing, photography, drawing/designing, and/or actually managing a media outlet as the BIG boss!
The APA Elementary Journalism Club, which will start this spring as a pilot, will then be in full force starting in the fall of the 2022-23 school year. The Club will meet during school hours, and will involve a 12-week fully realized curriculum.
APA ELEMENTARY 5TH GRADE NEWSPAPER
Starting in the fall of the 2022-23 school year, APA Elementary will christen its new 5th grade newspaper, yet to be named. The newspaper program will be competitive. All 5th graders will need to first complete the 12-week curriculum of the Journalism Club. Once done, they will apply for a position with the newspaper by submitting a 100-word essay and two letters of recommendation. (Selections will also be based on grade point average and class standing.) Once selected, all staff will work with the journalism/newspaper coach to develop the premiere issue of the newly founded 5th grade newspaper. Students will meet once a week, after school, but will have access to the newspaper room during the course of each week.
APA is currently a member of NESPA (National Elementary Press Association). The newsroom will include professional tools purchased with a grant, giving students a real-world experience as representatives of the “press.”
